A sign displayed at Newcastle station perfectly demonstrates the importance of proof reading. On arrival, German speakers were greeted by a large sign proclaiming that they were “Herylich Willkommen”. The sign should of course have read “Herzlich Willkommen”.

Had the business responsible invested in a German proof reader, they would have avoided not only the embarrassment of displaying this error, but also the cost of replacing the sign.

It is debatable if this sign ever fulfilled its purpose. Anyone who turned to it for guidance must surely have thought twice before relying on the detailed travel service information provided.
